Our "Weekend Getaway" - Ginnie Springs

So, James and I decided that we needed a weekend away. What better way to spend it than camping. Wilderness, snorkel gear, a campsite and us...oh yea plus 300 drunk college students and 5" of rain.

The day started out well enough, we get to Ginnie Springs around 10 or so, and pride ourselves on the fact that we can setup camp in 1 hour flat! With camp setup it is time to go to the springs, the very thing I have waited on all summer long! To the springs we go...get in and my mask is leaking, bad seal. Grand, but no problem because we have 4 more just like it in our gear bag at the campsite. When I say just like it, I mean JUST LIKE it. Everyone of them have bad seals. No problem again, because Ginnie Springs Outdoors is right up the road filling your Snorkling and Diving needs, for a fee. So, 1 new mask and 2 new mask boxes as to make sure that the masks are properly stored. Back to the Springs, get in, and adjust to the cold water (again). Now my mask won't clear; which is shocking because I used Sea Drops and even tried spit. Both of which are normally great, but not today. With a fogged mask, I leave the springs and go back to camp. I notice rain clouds...we decided that dinner should be in our immediate future. So, to dinner we go...

Dinner was great except in rained the whole time. But we were 11 miles from camp, so how bad could it be? 2.5 hours later we return to camp to scope the damage. We figured it would be a little wet...

The best part is that there is at least an inch of standing water in the tent. Which is not limited to one area, but was distributed evenly across the entire tent, covering the bed, and all of our clothes, bags etc. So, at this point, nothing we have is dry and we have no where to sleep...by the way it is 8PM, and still raining. After laughing for at least 10 minutes about this situation, and James determining that the big puddle in front of our tent was a "cesspool for mosquitos" we got to work. Into trash bags everything went. We wrung everthing out the best we could and put it in the Expedition...which was where we intended to sleep, but is now full which negates that. We left the tent and tiki torches where they were and decided to find a hotel. by 9:30 we are in bed at the Days Inn.
The next morning we went back the the campsite to deal with the tent, try to get in a good day of snorkeling and then go home and dry everything out and see what we could salvage. The campsite was very quite (hungover college students usually are). So, we started working with the tent. We took the canopy off and laid it across the hood of the truck...went back about 5 minutes later to fold it up into a trash bag and it was DRY! Ah-ha! The heat from the truck can dry our stuff! And that is just what it did, all day. We spread out the tent and let it dry for a few hours while we snorkeled, came back and laid out more stuff. We even used the tarp and kept moving it around so it had sun.

Nothing at all came home wet and it turned out to be a beautiful day! We got some great underwater pictures (hopefully) that I am having processed today. So I will try to post when I get home. Some great underwater cave shots! We left around 5 and the storm clouds were rolling in. But it all turned out great for us and we still had a fabulous weekend. It was certainly full of laughs!

Only you two could find humor in a weekend like that. Glad you had fun...in spite of Mother Nature!
